Beaches
On The Water
The Costa Ballena region of Costa Rica is full of amazing beaches. The stretch of coastline between Dominical and Ojochal holds some of the most beautiful beaches in the country and none is more impressive than Playa Hermosa with its almond and palm tree lined shores, golden sand, consistent waves, and gorgeous sunsets. One of Costa Rica's most famous natural landmarks, the Cola de Ballena or the Whale's Tail, is located at the southern end of Playa Hermosa. You can not walk to the Whale's Tail without forging the Uvita River, but the walk is a gorgeous one in which you are more likely to see monkeys, turtles, and other wildlife than another person. The northern end of Playa Hermosa is dominated by jungle covered point called Punta Achiote where local fishermen try their luck from the rocky ledges. There is also a fresh water swimming hole near Punta Achiote that is a perfect place to rinse off before heading back to your hotel or off on another adventure.
There are three main entrances to Playa Hermosa just off of Highway 34 (Costanera) where most people congregate for a fun filled day in the sun. You actually park on the beach so carrying coolers, umbrellas and other items you need to make your beach day perfect is easy and quick. The middle entrance is the most widely used and is where local vendors sell coconut water, fresh fruits, and ceviche. Local business owners have also banded together to provide lifeguards for Playa Hermosa. The rip tides can be powerful during low tides or during big swells. If you are not a strong swimmer you should stay near the lifeguard tower when venturing into the ocean. Dominical is a more well known surf break but Playa Hermosa is a gem. The waves are usually about a foot smaller than Dominical and less powerful, but the wind is usually more gentle making for cleaner surf. Hermosa can hold waves up to about 8 feet before closing out. Look inland while you are in the water and all you will see is a jungle covered mountains. The town of Hermosa is hidden in the jungle about 1km from the beach.
Hermosa is a perfect beach for family outings and picnics. Get there early and set up camp under an almond tree that will provide shade all day. Then get out in the sun and build a sandcastle, play in the water and just be a kid again.
