When you arrive in Dominical you are greeted with bumpy dirt roads, towering palm trees, charming shops, great restaurants and a wide variety of accommodations. Dominical is at the north end of Costa Ballena and rests between the Baru River, lush mountains and the Pacific Ocean. The Baru is a major river that empties into the Pacific just north of Dominical. This forms sandbars at the river mouth that help shape the waves that have made Dominical a world class surf destination. The beach is lined with almond and palm trees which create nice shady areas for beach combers to sit and enjoy the day while watching the surfers. Most people congregate on the beach in front of Tortilla Flats (rated by CNN as one of the worlds best beach bars) but, you can walk south down the beach and find a nice shady spot to enjoy by yourself.
If you get hungry while visiting Dominical, there are restaurants and bars that serve everything from organic veggie sandwiches to greasy burgers and everything in between. Dominical accommodations include campgrounds, small hotels, rental homes and hostels. You should have no problem finding a hotel to fit your personality and budget. The main road in Dominical is packed with local vendors selling sarongs, hand made pottery, Borucan masks, and silver jewelry. If you can't find what you are looking for from the vendors there are shops scattered around town that may have what you are looking for. If you are looking to party after the sun goes down Dominical is the place for you. Dominical is the Costa Ballena hotspot for nightlife and parties. Bars stay open late and host ladies night, live music and other fun events throughout the year.
Costa Ballena is one of the most beautiful regions of Costa Rica and it is full of fun activities which make Dominical a great 'home base' for travelers. Within 30 minutes of Dominical tourist can visit numerous beaches, swim in rivers or go river rafting, fly over the jungle on a zipline. Trek through the jungle and see exotic wildlife, and much more.
